Every Teacher Must Choose Grade Level Pre-K K-3 4-9 9-12 Note: K-8 and 7-12 used to be the grade level choices. Ohio Department of Education

Every Teacher Must Choose Subject Area Core subjects: English Language Arts Mathematics Science Social Studies Specialized subjects: Music, Art, Foreign Language, Physical Education Vocational Agriculture and Family and Consumer Science Business, Accounting, and Financial Literacy Computers and Technology Other Vocational Specialties (e.g.: Apollo) Library and Media Specialist and Intervention Specialist

Educational Requirements High School Diploma Bachelor’s Degree in Education B.A. or B.S. from an accredited college or university Student teaching and field experience Resident educator program (4-year program once employed) Master’s Degree in Education Most teachers choose to earn an advanced degree Continuing Education Follow a process to earn a professional license Re-license every 5 years after earning a professional license Ohio Department of Education To be a teacher is to be a lifelong learner.

Job Duties and Responsibilities: A Basic Job Description According to Ohio Means Jobs, Secondary School Teachers: Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures. Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to students. Assign and assess class work and homework. Observe and evaluate students' academic performance, behavior, social development, and physical health. Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests. Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate. Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to evaluate students' progress. Prepare students for the future by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks.

Confer with parents or guardians, other teachers, counselors, and administrators to discuss students’ needs and progress and to resolve problems. Collaborate with other teachers and administrators in the development, evaluation, and revision of secondary school curricular programs. Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as requested or required. Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops to maintain and improve professional competence. Administer standardized tests and interpret results to determine students' strengths and areas of need.

Knowledge Necessary (according to Ohio Means Jobs) Knowledge of the following: curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, the structure and content of the English language, human behavior and performance, individual differences in ability, personality, and interests, learning and motivation, psychological research methods, & the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.

Abilities and Personality Necessary (according to Ohio Means Jobs) Ability to do the following: listen to and understand information and ideas via speech and writing communicate information and ideas so others will understand apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense (deductive reasoning) Personality: Social and Helpful Teaching jobs require: Integrity, Leadership, Dependability, Stress Tolerance, Self-Control, and Adaptability/Flexibility

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs: Why Teaching is Challenging Physiological, security, social, and esteem needs MUST be met prior to any self-actualizing needs that lead to both self-awareness and personal growth.

What do teachers, educators, and support professionals Pre-K through 12th grade do? Lily Eskelsen Garcia, 2015 President of the National Education Association, explains in the following video (from Campaign for America’s Future and posted to YouTube) what teachers do all day. Teaching truly is a calling, and it is both challenging and rewarding. Anyone who has never been a teacher cannot fully comprehend what teaching actually entails.
