Lights! Camera! Action! Starring… Jonathan Jones Jackie Skinner Ross Connell This is the title slide, PowerPoint will automatically format the first slide with the title master, although this can be changed in the design palette. 27 November 2018

The plot for today Creating the Library videos – the why and how Camtasia – the detail of how Introducing Jing and what you can do with it Jing – have a play

In the beginning There were the podcasts Tours of each floor Updated in 2010 Technically challenging Needed updating with the arrival of Bulmershe Collections Until 2010 had enhanced podcasts with pictures. Decided too much time to update so just updated the audio files

We wanted… To move away from floor by floor tours – difficult to maintain and would they be used anyway? A resource that any liaison librarian could use in a introductory talk on the Library A resource for marketing the Library on open days Extra support for users for completing key tasks

How Screencasts! Still images with text captions Playing to music instead of speech Can incorporate video clips too Two available Welcome to the Library – 196 views in the Autumn Term Finding a book – 219 views

Decisions/issues Branding Consistency Choice of pictures Choice of music How to upload to website and make available Light touch branding for videos such as ours Consistency of transitions and text box styles Video footage shot over two days – Ellie wearing a different outfit! Uploading to streaming server for podcasts was tedious – much easier for this, to drop in through BB and ITS send a link to go into website

Camtasia – what’s it all about? Paid for and installed on Sony laptop Record…anything Edit…afterwards Produce…with interactivity? PowerPoint websites webcams software (e.g. EndNote) Cut , splice, zoom, transitions and captions Sound (e.g. can remove sound of typing)

What next? Ideas for future screencasts please!

Jing – what’s it all about? Jing a free, lite version of Camtasia Easy to use but basic functionality static screenshot capture and simple annotation record on screen actions and sound; no native video editing Save file to play in browser/media player Upload to Screencast.com to share via URL Online tutorial

Jing – potential uses Quick, on-the- fly videos in response to queries One I did earlier Recording one-to-one demos with users Videos for staff training and reference Can pay for added functionality/storage See generally: Mansfield, D. (2010). No audition required! Using video tutorials in the 24x7 age. SCONUL Focus, 49, pp.16-18.
