Heads Up 15 th April 2014 Update for the NHS Yorkshire and Humber Regional Leadership Council

Regional News STUDY REVEALS: NHS Failure on Diversity at Senior Levels 10 April, 2014 | By Shaun LinternShaun Lintern A new study has found the proportion of senior NHS positions held by people of black and minority ethnic backgrounds has barely changed in eight years, with progress towards better representation labelled as glacial. A study by a Middlesex University academic, The Snowy Peaks of the NHS, found the number of appointments to NHS trust boards of people from a BME background dropped from a high of 8.7 per cent in 2006 to just 5.8 per cent in 2013 – its second lowest rate since This study shows the service has been in denial about the scale of the problem, he said. There is a repeating pattern of people saying it isnt good but its getting better, when actually it has got worse. A spokeswoman for the Department of Health said NHS England, NHS Employers and the NHS Leadership Academy were undertaking a range of initiatives to improve BME representation at senior levels, including a mentoring scheme. Testimonials from the first Social Media workshop held on 10th April: Really has opened my eyes to a whole new field I knew nothing about. I am sure it will enable me to get good results Fascinating insight into different social media channels I will commit to using more means of social networking Some excellent tools for managing social media Lots of new information on using Twitter and YouTube effectively Given me more confidence to have a go with social media – I was a complete novice before attending Tim was really engaging, fantastically knowledgeable on the subject and delivered his training with some humour too. I think he transferred his enthusiasm for social media to some of us too, and it was well worth an early start for a trip to Leeds to take part in. Three social media workshops are being held on 10 th April, 8 th May and 12 th June 2014 in Leeds. All the workshops are fully booked (36 places in total) 27 participants from NHS and 9 from Local Authority. There is a big demand for the workshops with a current waiting list of 40. For more information please contact Social Media Workshops Congratulations to the successful applicants for the Accelerate programme. It commences on 29 th April 2014 and will finish in October. We will be running Cohort Four in October/ March. Innov8 Update

National News Watch this space for more news of the 2014 Regional Leadership Awards. We will be looking to build on the great success of this first year to increase the number of nominees from across the region when nominations open in the summer 195 places on the Mary Seacole Programme have been taken up so far and the next application window will open in May, date to be advised by the Academy. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Programme – 80 participants recruited and continuing with the programme, a further complement of places will be available in the Autumn for this Masters programme. The Nye Bevan Programme has 36 participants in our region and further recruitment for a small number of places will open in the Autumn. The Nursing and Midwifery Frontline Programme has well over a hundred Y&H applications, many more Yorkshire and the Humber organisations can get access to this free development programme for bands 5, 6 and 7.
