Approach 3: The Behaviourist Approach 3.4 Contemporary Debate: Using conditioning techniques to control the behaviour of children

Starter Imagine that you are a teacher… Read scenario on page 1 of the handout.

Why is this a debate Adults have always tried to control the behaviour of children Rewards and punishments common Psychology has given us greater understanding and control. Parents and teachers now more aware of conditioning techniques

Why is this a debate This raises ethical issues. Should we modify behaviour without a child’s consent? Is it fair to overwrite free will? Is it in a child’s best interest in the long term? What happens when rewards and punishments are taken away? Before looking at the various arguments for this debate, what is your opinion? Is it ethical to use conditioning techniques on children? Explain your point of view.

Individual Task Individual not group project Investigate this debate and create: A booklet (either electronic or made by hand) A detailed poster (similar to the ones made last time) A detailed PowerPoint A website A video or animation Any other medium you can think of (just make sure to run it by the teacher first)

Individual task Read the criteria carefully Tips Do all the research first. Find out as much as you can, and then plan how best to use what you have found Don’t just rely on what others have said. Come up with your own views and opinions. It is a debate so there is no right or wrong answers Use the internet. Ask me if you need help
