Jefferson and War Hawks British and French would seize American ships, hurting trade. Britain would utilize impressment, forcing Americans into the British Navy Jefferson attempted an embargo on British goods in 1807, but it hurt the United States more than helping it.

Tecumseh’s Confederacy William Henry Harrison convinced three chiefs to sign away three million acres of land. Tecumseh formed a confederacy against the American settlers He, along with his brother the Prophet will attempt to have the British ally with them to war against the Americans. Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811 led to the war of 1812.

War of 1812 begins… in 1811 President Madison asked Congress for a Declaration of War in the Spring of 1812. We were really unprepared to fight the British. We invaded Canada, only to be pushed back through Buffalo and Detroit. Britain would burn several towns in the winter of 1813, stranding the residents to starve.

War at Sea Our Navy was also very unprepared to fight. We had 16 ships, and three large warships that had some victories. Britain takes its massive fleet and blockades the United States, causing our warships to remain in port.

Burning of Washington, Peace? By August, 1814, the British made it into Washington. They burned the Capital, Dolly Madison evacuated and took paintings with her for preservation. US Capital and White House were in ruins. As they reach Baltimore, they are unable to advance any further. Some Federalists were attempting to secede from the Union because they did not agree with the war, they hold the Hartford Convention Treaty of Ghent signed late December, 1814, allowing peace between the countries.

Battle of New Orleans Hartford Convention did not agree with the war, and it was predominantly Federalists. Andrew Jackson has a massive victory at the Battle of New Orleans… But he won after the war was over, the memo didn’t reach them until after the battle. Victory at New Orleans also sealed the fate of the Federalists, who were seen as traitors for attempting to secede.
