Birth Intervals In addition to their impact on fertility, birth intervals may also affect the health of mothers and their children.

Length of Birth Intervals 16% of births occur less than 24 months after the preceding birth. Doctors recommend a birth interval of at least 36 months

Fertility Preferences of Married Women 81% either want no more children or want to delay childbearing by at least 2 years, or are already sterilized.

Overall, 79% of women either want to delay having another child or stop childbearing altogether. These women are potential contraceptive users for spacing and limiting.

61% of abortions in the last five years were induced using vacuum aspiration and 28% were induced with an oral pill/tablet

Key Findings Women have on average 3.0 children, down from 3.4 in 2005. Women marry at a median age of 20.3 compared to 22.6 among men. Women have their first birth at a median age of 22.3. 79% of currently married women either want no more children or want to wait at least 2 years before their next child. 17% of married women have an unmet need for family planning. Currently married women report their ideal family size as 3.1 children. 5% of married women have had an abortion in the 5 years before the survey.
