Lesson 2- Diversity of Life Organism- an individual form of life that is capable of growing, processing nutrients, and reproducing

Unit 1, Lesson 5/6-Classification of Living Things and Domains of Life In 1753, a Swedish scientist named Carolus Linneaus developed a system of naming and classifying living things based on how they relate to each other. This is called- Taxonomy the process of dividing things into groups according to their characteristics is called- Classification

What are all of the categories? Did (Domain) King (Kingdom) Phillip (Phylum) Come (Class) Over (Order) For (Family) Good (Genus) Spaghetti? (Species) More general More specific

Then, Scientists add a new top category- called a Domain Then, Scientists add a new top category- called a Domain. It is the broadest category. There are 3 domains! Archaea Bacteria Eukarya -tiny -single-celled (prokaryote) -no nucleus -often live in extreme, harsh environments, like hot springs, deep parts of the ocean, etc. -tiny -single-celled (prokaryote) -no nucleus -includes bad bacteria that causes disease and good bacteria that helps our bodies -larger than the other two -includes all life forms with cells that have nuclei (eukaryote) -includes all animals, plants, fungi, and protozoa Divides into 4 categories- Kingdoms Protista, Fungi, Plantae,Animalia

Unit 1, Lesson 7-Classifying Organisms Lab Print off and cut out the taxonomy cards Separate all of the organism cards from the rest -Domestic Dog -American Brown Bear -Goldfish -Human -Domestic Cat -Bess Beetle For each organism, one at a time, try to classify from largest to smallest. (start with Eukarya card, then put Animalia under it, etc.) Look at the cards closely. If you have trouble with this, then have your LC print off the answer key and go through the arrangements from the key, one organism at a time.

Main functions are to store energy and serve as structural material Examples- table sugars, starch in potatoes and grains Lipids Composed of long chains of carbon atoms with hydrogen atoms attached They are not soluble in water They are used in energy storage and chemical messengers Includes waxes, fats, and oils

Organic Compounds-4 main types Proteins Serves as carriers of other substances, information and guards against invasion Made by connecting amino acids together (type of organic molecule) Nucleic Acids Composed of many smaller molecules called nucleotides connected together Important in storing and transmitting info necessary for processes of life -2 types- DNA-contains instructions for all of organism’s traits RNA- carries genetic info and de- livers amino acids
