Ethos and Charism

A charism is a deep awareness of a Gospel value or values linked to a special need in the world. The Gospel value or emphasis remains constant over the history of the group throughout time. The area of need also remains constant but the specific expressions of the need may change over time, place and culture. Charism is always at the service of mission.

The ethos and charism of the school express the assumptions, beliefs and values that the Catholic community shares. They are reflected in what is done, how it is done and who is doing it. A school communicates its distinctive identity through its ethos and charism which find expression in its religious values, culture, rituals and practices.

Linking to the Religion Curriculum

Together at One Altar

Mercy Heritage Centre

Choose one of the Religious Congregation websites and read through the key information – What do you learn about spirituality through the men and women who are part of these congregations? What do you learn about the vocation of teaching and education? How is the story of the founder interpreted through the work and prayer of the congregation?

How can you bring these values or ways of being spiritual into your own life?
