ISOPA PRODUCT STEWARDSHIP PROGRAMMES Why “Walk the Talk” ISOPA PRODUCT STEWARDSHIP PROGRAMMES – “WALK THE TALK”   SPEAKER NOTES – “WHY” MODULE The purpose of this module is to introduce the ISOPA programme to the managers of factories where we aim to present the “Walk the Talk” package. The module explains the overall rationale of the industry initiative on the safe use of polyurethane chemicals. SLIDE #1 This presentation introduces ISOPA’s programme designed to make the factory a safer place in which to work. “Walk the Talk” signifies that behaviour is more important than words Revision 2015

ISOPA Member Companies SLIDE #2   First – a few words about ISOPA. This initiative is shared by all members of ISOPA and you see the logos of the other members of ISOPA in this slide.

Still too many cases of diisocyanate-attributed injuries Today’s Situation Still too many cases of diisocyanate-attributed injuries Compliance with EU Regulations affect producers and users of chemicals Need for continuous improvement in everyone’s Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) practice SLIDE #3   Isocyanates have to be used safely and can be used safely but legislators are fully aware that there are unsafe practices being used in Europe. Reports from German and UK highlight the number incidences of occupational lung diseases. Several of these are related to the use of isocyanates. EU regulations, including the future REACH, affect all users of chemicals. There are many reasons to improve the safety performance in the use of chemicals.

Changing for the Better Attitude and behaviour changes of all involved are essential requirements for this Product Stewardship initiative to be successful ISOPA members and down-streamers own their specific EHS and Product Stewardship (PS) responsibilities Together we want to prevent unnecessary regulation of the PU Industry through cooperative and proactive Product Stewardship designed to stimulate safety behaviour SLIDE #4   Attitude and behaviour changes are the keys to improvement. Everyone is responsible for EHS issues in their part of the value chain. But we need to work together to obtain an improvement through the value chain.

ISOPA’s “Walk the Talk” Initiative ISOPA through its members provides consistent Product Stewardship information to assist in changing safety-related attitude and behaviour The programme is designed for continuous improvement, with regular follow-up The programme stimulates a PUSH/ PULL, in which ISOPA is exerting the PUSH (this initiative) and down-streamers will embrace the PULL SLIDE #5   This programme, though initiated by ISOPA and its members, is designed to be shared and implemented by all. The programme works on continuous improvement principles – there is no end point as we strive for better and better standards. New staff will also be brought into the programme. For it to be successful the factory managers and their staff must be fully involved and committed. These are the basic points behind the PUSH <-> Pull programme.

ISOPA push consistent product stewardship information via The Push-Pull Approach ISOPA Member Company Create internal training programme for ISOPA Package. Integrate into management processes and define metrics ISOPA ‘Walk The Talk’ Package Why Checklist MDI users TDI users Other Users of isocyanates and polyols plus Trade Associations Sector Groupings System Houses Distributors Legislators Public Domain PUSH PULL ISOPA push consistent product stewardship information via the Walk the Talk Package and its trained frontline staff. Users to PULL the standards into their own activities as a basis for continuously improving handling of isocyanates. SLIDE #6   This slide illustrates the basic elements of the whole programme The PUSH element is the delivery of the “standard” ISOPA package – but tailored for the particular factory. The PULL element is the expectation that users of the chemicals will actively use and promote this programme in their own training schemes. The objective is to get a unified approach, consistency of messages and clarity about the improvement of safety performance throughout the industry. The materials are on the ISOPA website (www.isopa.org) and can be used by everyone. They will be visible to legislators.

Better reputation and credibility Expectations For the Industry Better reputation and credibility Stimulate industry-wide continuous improvement For the company Being a good neighbour Fewer accidents and injuries → lower production loss and disruption Motivated employees Better relations with local authorities For the employee A safer and cleaner place to work for me and for my colleagues Fewer accidents and injuries → less impact on the family SLIDE #7   This slide lists the benefits to be expected for the whole industry, for your company and for all employees. These will be realised only if all of us work together.

Embrace Product Stewardship within a process of continuous improvement What is MY Role ? Embrace Product Stewardship within a process of continuous improvement Set a good example - always Be professional Be part of the team → “Walk the Talk” SLIDE #8   This programme involves everyone working together in a team to achieve high standards.

Together we can change reality and perception for the better “Walk the Talk” SLIDE #9   Let’s do it!
