JACKSON STREET CHURCH OF CHRIST PLEASE TURN OFF CELL PHONES WELCOME TO THE JACKSON STREET CHURCH OF CHRIST PLEASE TURN OFF CELL PHONES

Colossians 3:14-17  But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15  And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17  And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

THE NEGLECTED COMMAND

THE NEGLECTED COMMAND Luke 17:11-19 "Now it happened as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. 13 And they lifted up their voices and said, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!" 14 So when He saw them, He said to them, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And so it was that as they went , they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan. >>>

THE NEGLECTED COMMAND 17 So Jesus answered and said, 'Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? 18 'Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?" 19 And He said to him, "Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well."" Col 3:15 "And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful." Phil 4:6 "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;" 1 Th 5:18 "in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

I. THINGS FOR WHICH PAUL WAS THANKFUL DELIVERANCE FROM SIN - Rom 6:17 "But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered." FELLOW CHRISTIANS - Phil 1:3-5 "I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, 5 for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now," GOD'S GRACE -1 Cor 1:4 "I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus,"

I. THINGS FOR WHICH PAUL WAS THANKFUL FOOD -1 Cor 10:30 "But if I partake with thanks, why am I evil spoken of for the food over which I give thanks?" VICTORY OVER DEATH -1 Cor 15:54-57 "So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory." 55 "O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?" 56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."

I. THINGS FOR WHICH PAUL WAS THANKFUL TRIUMPH IN CHRIST - 2 Cor 2:14 "Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place." CARING HEARTS - 2 Cor 8:16 "But thanks be to God who puts the same earnest care for you into the heart of Titus." HIS INHERITANCE - Col 1:12 "giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light." HIS OPPORTUNITY TO MINISTER -1 Tim 1:12 "And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry,"

II. HOW TO BE THANKFUL COUNT YOUR BLESSING NOT YOUR TROUBLES. - Psa 118:24 'This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it." Robinson Crusoe concluded there was no condition in the world so miserable that something to be thankful could not be found. 90% of the people in the world make less than $500 a year. 97% live in one room, without electricity, running water, or our luxuries.

II. HOW TO BE THANKFUL REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE AND YOUR CLOSENESS TO GOD AND HIS PEOPLE -1 Pet 2:9-10 "But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy."

II. HOW TO BE THANKFUL REMEMBER WHERE YOUR HOME IS - Heb 11:13-16 'These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. 15 And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them."

II. HOW TO BE THANKFUL LIVE FOR THE PRESENT AND FUTURE NOT THE PAST - Phil 3:12-15 "Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you."

II. HOW TO BE THANKFUL BE A GIVER NOT A TAKER - Acts 20:35 "I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive." Stingy people are rarely grateful people. If we can conquer selfishness it will be easier to be thankful.

II. HOW TO BE THANKFUL LEARN THE SECRET AND POWER OF PRAYER Phil 4:6 "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;" PRAYER AND THANKSGIVING ARE CONSTANTLY LINKED TOGETHER IN THE BIBLE.

ARE YOU NEGLECTING THE COMMAND TO BE THANKFUL? Are you fulfilling the command to be thankful? 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18  Rejoice always, 17  pray without ceasing, 18  in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Are you thankful in all the situations of your life?
