How can children be ill-treated or abused? Lesson objective to learn how a child can be physically ill-treated or abused in the care setting and what systems are in place to protect this age group.

An infant or child can be physically ill-treated or abused by: Being left without adult protection Being bullied at school or by other children who live in their community Being parented by people who are unable to put their children’s needs before their own Deliberate force-feeding or starvation Leaning a child in a wet bed or soiled clothing Being physically injured in care, for example, slapping, punching, kicking – this includes not preventing an injury from occurring Being given a poisonous substance, such as drugs, alcohol or cleaning fluids being drowned Being neglected, that is not being clean or fed nutritionally balanced meals

Task 1 - to learn and revise: What can happen to a child if they are not being fed the correct nutritional diet? If a child needs to be protected from various types of abuse, can you list four. What does psychological abuse mean? If a child is thriving what does this mean? What is emotional neglect, list several ways this can happen? What is verbal abuse and how can this affect a young child? Violent scenes at home can cause many problems for young children, can you say what and why?

Every Child Matters (ECM) Is a UK government initiative that was launched in 2003, at least partly in response to the death of Victoria Climbie. It is one of the most important policy initiative and development programmes in relation to children and children's services of the last decade, and has been described as a "sea of change" to the children and families agenda. It has been the title of three government papers, leading to the Children Act 2004. Every Child Matters covers children and young adults up to the age of 19, or 24 for those with disabilities. Its main aims are for every child, whatever their background or circumstances, to have the support they need to: Be healthy Stay safe Enjoy and achieve Make a positive contribution Achieve economic well-being

Every child matters why was this agenda put in place How does this agenda help infants, children and young people?

How can this agenda help young people? Every child matters How can this agenda help young people? Who will be involved?

What systems are in place to help infants, children and young people from abuse of all types?

Many systems are put in place to help the young that are suffering from abuse, an example of how information is gained is shown in the example here.

Several other child centred reviews of feedback surrounding a child's feelings and emotions are shown on the next two slides.
