Two case studies in work package 6: Overview Two case studies in work package 6: Thuringia (aid to enterprise) Viborg (enterprise and innovation) The urban community initiative Work in progress, still in preparation

WP6 – enterprise (and innovation) « Betriebspanel » data on 1106 enterprises in Thuringia Some receiving direct SF grants, some not => the controls Data on employment, investment, turnover, etc A range of statistical techniques will be piloted, including DiD, PSM

Enterprise (cont.) Similar study of enterprise (and innovation) assistance in Viborg to follow 563 assisted firms vs matched similar non-assisted firms (location, activity) Results due Summer 2009 (Thuringia), end-2009 (Viborg)

URBAN Community Initiative 70 neighbourhoods in crisis – economic, social and physical regeneration To our knowledge, first time such methods used for urban regeneration Unit: the 70 programme areas « Comparison » not « control » group: similar non-URBAN areas, preferably in same or nearby city

URBAN (cont.) Indicators: unemployment, demography, national deprivation indices (large MSs) Statistical methods: DiD, simple PSM « Heroic » nature (data, controls, sample sizes) – it’s a pilot only! Comparison with other methods (parent city, national trends) to assess validity Results due Autumn 2009
