Chapter 35.6 Questions

Roman Housing Patricians lived in large houses built out of stone and marble The houses had thick walls to keep the noise of the city out of the house as much as possible

Roman Housing Inside the front door was the atrium (a hall where guests were greeted) In the atrium, there was also an indoor pool that helped to cool the house and an open roof to let in sunlight

Roman Housing Another important room for the patricians was the dining room Aside from the large table, there would be many pictures on the wall, statues, and a fountain for decoration

Roman Housing During dinner parties, guests would lay on couches and eat food prepared by the slaves They would also listen to music played by the slaves for entertainment

Roman Housing For plebeians, many of them crowded into apartment buildings Others would live in smaller apartments above where they worked

Roman Housing Without kitchens, plebeians would have to cook their meals on portable grills which would fill the apartments with smoke The apartments were cramped, dirty, noisy, rat- infested, and prone to fires
