Imposing Stupor Spectral Euphemistically Maligned Debauched Poe Nonfiction Vocabulary Words Imposing Stupor Spectral Euphemistically Maligned Debauched

Vocabulary Words Standing in the doorway, his imposing figure was intimidating. He was huge and formidable looking. The medication left my sister in such a stupor that she was barely able to keep her eyes open or speak. Coming through the fog, the man’s spectral image frightened the small children. They were sure that they were looking at a ghost. Even though her boss was speaking euphemistically when she said that she was “unfortunately going to have to let [Beth] go,” Beth knew that she really meant she was firing her. D.J. felt maligned by his former best friend when he heard the nasty rumors being spread all over the school. After his arrest, his drunken habits and debauched lifestyle could no longer be concealed from his family.

Vocabulary Words Imposing – adj – large and impressive looking Stupor – noun – dull, half-conscious state Spectral – adj – ghostly; unreal Euphemistically – adv – in a manner meant to mask or substitute for something unpleasant (euphemism, noun form) Maligned – adj – falsely accused of bad conduct; slandered (malign, verb form) Debauched– adj – characterized by extreme indulgence in pleasures

Things to consider while revising your Death of Poe assignment: 1) Main Idea must be a complete sentence. 2) Main Idea should relate to the purpose, but they’re not the same thing. 3) Purpose: Is the author trying to convince me of something (to persuade) or just provide information (to inform)? 4) You should provide supporting details that clearly support the main idea that your wrote. Then, you should explain how each detail supports the main idea. This means a two-part answer for each one.

Informational Reading Exit Slip In a fully developed Cheeseburger Paragraph, explain which claim about Poe’s death you find the most convincing. Support your answer with evidence from the text(s). Remember, you’re making your own claim here, so consider your evidence carefully and be specific.
