Discipleship: According to the gospel accounts, Jesus made many disciples. Moreover, Jesus commanded His apostles to make more disciples. The subject of discipleship is very important. What is discipleship? Are there requirements to becoming a disciple? What can we learn from the earliest disciples of Christ?

Defining Discipleship Luke 14:33

“Disciple” The word means, “a learner, that is, a pupil” (Strong’s Hebrew and Greek Dictionaries) 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. Matt 28:18-20 (NKJV)

Jesus Molded His Closest Disciples: Jesus called certain men to become His followers. They committed their very lives to Him. They grew convinced He is the Christ, the Son of God. They asked questions (Matt 13:10; 17:10; Mk 10:10). They were to be granted “the Spirit of truth” (John 16:5-15; 14:26). They were commissioned to make more disciples (Lk 24:46-47; Acts 1-2).

The Great Commission: ~ The apostles taught others of Christ’s deity, His example, His teaching, His sacrifice for mankind’s sins, and of His kingdom. ~ Many responded by repenting, confessing their belief in Jesus as the Resurrected Savior, and by putting Him on through the immersion of water for the remission of sins (Acts 2:36-38; 8:37-39). ~ Luke wrote that “the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch” (Acts 11:27). The word Christian means, “follower of Christ” (Strong’s).

The Great Commission: ~ John 20:30-31; Eph. 3:1-7 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. Matt 28:18-20 (NKJV) ~ John 20:30-31; Eph. 3:1-7

Jesus Requires: Complete devotion and loyalty to Him Lk 14:26, 27, 33; Matt 7:28; 13:54; Mk 5:42; 7:37

Jesus Requires: Complete devotion and loyalty to Him Remembering your place, while striving to imitate Him Lk 6:46; Jn 13:34-35

Jesus Requires: Complete devotion and loyalty to Him Remembering your place, while striving to imitate Him Emulation of a life lived, including sacrifice Lk 14:27; 9:23-26; 1 Cor 15:31

Jesus Requires: Complete devotion and loyalty to Him Remembering your place, while striving to imitate Him Emulation of a life lived, including sacrifice Putting away of sinful practices and attitudes 1 Cor 6:9-11; Gal 5:19-21

Jesus Requires: Complete devotion and loyalty to Him Remembering your place, while striving to imitate Him Emulation of a life lived, including sacrifice Putting away of sinful practices and attitudes A Consciousness of God in all things Rom 14:6; Eph 5:21-25; 6:5-6; 1 Thess 5:16-18

Defining Discipleship: Become a pupil, a learner! Be perfectly (completely) trained; be like our Master Teacher in all things! Involves study, dedication, & emulation of Christ! Given all that Christ has done for you, what have you done for Him? He gave His life for us. Discipleship equates to the giving of our lives to, and for, Christ Jesus.
