Supporting Academically At-Risk Students with Mandatory Academic Coaching Becky Varian, Director, and Chris Khumprakob, Assistant Director of the Conditional Admission Program Center for Student Progress, Youngstown State University What are the requirements for conditional admission to YSU? Have a high school GPA of below 2.0 or a composite ACT score below 17 (or corresponding SAT score) Are required to meet weekly with a coordinator at the Center for Student Progress Must also fulfill other various requirements as stated in a contract Old Policy (2008-2012) In 2007, YSU created a conditional admission policy whereby all conditionally admitted students were provided an academic coach for weekly academic support meetings. However, because these meetings were not mandatory, many students did not attend and retention was poor. New Policy (2012-Present) In 2012, the policy was changed, making the academic support meetings mandatory. This significantly impacted not only retention, but GPA as well (as demonstrated in the chart to the left).
