Negativity: The impact of bad news has a high value. (Bad news is good news) Closeness to home: News closest to the culture and geography of the news makers is of high value. (People care more about things closer to them) Personality: Stories that centre on well known people are of high value. (Fame gets attention)

Continuity: If a story has already been in the news, then additional information about this story is valuable. (Once someone has an interest in a subject they want to know more) Simplicity: Simple, straight forward stories are preferred. (People want you to get to the point). Currency: A current event or issue will have high value. (People want to be kept up to date) Unexpectedness: An unexpected event which attracts dramatic coverage is valued. (Shock creates interest)
