The Machine November 27, 2018
Intro Purpose: To break an egg into a waiting skillet using a highly inefficient, but very cool machine. Reasonable assumptions: All losses, friction forces, and uncontrollable variances ignored. Procedure: Read on! November 27, 2018
Special Features The process starts and ends in the same place The machine is designed with simplicity in mind, so that its results are easily duplicated. It is modular, because of the necessity of transporting it to and from Estabrook. November 27, 2018
Phase One Frying pan is set on the lever. Center of mass of the lever shifts. November 27, 2018
Phase Two The string and pulleys change the direction of the lever’s pull. November 27, 2018
Phase Three Marble gate is lifted and releases the marbles. Gravitational potential energy is converted into kinetic energy. November 27, 2018
Phase Four Kinetic energy of the marbles converted to potential energy as they land in an elevated cup on the end of a center of mass lever. November 27, 2018
Phase Five Marbles shift the center mass of the 2nd lever, releasing the string trigger. November 27, 2018
Phase Six The lever releases a swing arm, which has tension acting on it from rubber bands and the string trigger, turning elastic potential energy into kinetic energy November 27, 2018
Phase Seven The balloon is popped and the egg falls into the frying pan, with gravitational energy being converted into kinetic energy. November 27, 2018
