Chapter 13.3: The Renaissance Spreads EQ: How did advances in science and the arts during the Renaissance change life throughout Europe?

Q1: Silk Roads Launches Ideas… Europe experienced revival of trade during late Middle Ages Most notable example of return of long-distance trade was reopening of Silk Roads Silk Roads were ancient trade routes that connected Europe with China

Q2: Philosophy of Humanism Trade and advancements encouraged people to think in new ways Led to philosophy of Humanism Humanism is a secular (non-church) belief that the ideal man has beauty, worth, and dignity – life should be cherished not simply endured Focuses on human beings and their potential for achievement, celebrated the importance of the individual

Q3: Humanist Thought Humanistic view differed from medieval thinking - Humanism valued persons potential more than king or church they belonged to Stressed importance of leading Christian life, but challenged people to think for themselves too Think about Church teachings, not blindly accept Church orders

The Difference Between Individualism & Humanism Is: 1. In humanism humans are seen as having potential as a whole, in individualism, each person has potential. 2. Humanism balances perspective and religion, while individualism is the belief that each person has self worth. 3. Humanism balances the power of the human mind and religion, while individualism is the belief that each person has self worth.

Q4: Renaissance Moves North In late 1400s war in kingdoms of Italy drove Italian artists north, sharing new styles, ideas, techniques with northern Europe Renaissance ideas began spreading north from Italy to France, Germany, Spain, England, etc

Q5: An Artist’s Appreciation Artists like Leonardo da Vinci had high appreciation of human form Used knowledge of human anatomy to create more realistic human forms in drawings/paintings “Study of Hands” by Leonardo da Vinci
