Safety Management Systems (SMS) A Safety Management System (SMS) is defined as “an organized approach to managing safety, including the necessary organizational structures, accountabilities, policies, and procedures” A SMS is currently required for air carriers and there is a rule pending to develop a SMS for specific airports within the United States. Eventually, SMS may be mandated for other components of the industry including flight schools.
Purpose To determine the level of SMS implementation for collegiate flight trainers.
Methodology Utilized various resources to develop SMS implementation survey including: AC 120-92B FAR Part 5 International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Safety Management Manual Utilized Safety professionals at three Universities to validate instrument.
