SEXTING

WHAT IS SEXTING? The newly minted word for sending or posting nude or semi-nude photos or videos

WHY ARE KIDS SEXTING? 82.2% said to get attention 66.3% said to be “cool” 59.4% said to be like the popular girls 54.8% said to find a boyfriend

WHY ARE KIDS SEXTING? Peer pressure ( 52%-Boys) (23%-Friend) Revenge after a breakup Blackmail Flirting Impulsive behavior Special present Joke Think it will remain private

What Did the World Do Before Cell Phones and Texting? You got your stuff done on time. Kids talked to their parents in person. We used quarters at pay telephones. Parents owned cameras that took photos. People used complete words, not BFF, LOL, OMG, or . Wrote personal letters and mailed them with a licked stamp. IM had an apostrophe (I’m).

1 out of 5 teens have sent nude or semi nude pictures or videos of themselves 40% of teens have had a sexually suggestive message shown to them 71% of teen girls and 67% of teen guys who have sent sexually suggestive content say they have sent this to a boyfriend/girlfriend 44% of teens say it is common for these messages to get shared with people other than the intended recipient

Why do teens send these messages? Pressure from guys Pressure from friends As a joke “Fun or flirtatious” “Feel sexy” or as a “sexy present” To bully or harass To get attention

Potential Consequences Future employment and college admission may be jeopardized Relationship problems Mental health issues/Suicide Violate school rules Legal issues

THE LAW The legal system is lagging behind technological advances. In general, the law says any nude or semi-nude photo of someone less than 17 yrs old constitutes child pornography. A NY lawyer is pushing for federal legislation to make it a misd. to send sexual pictures via the cell. He says laws are too hot or too cold. Teens are either treated as pedophiles or get a slap on the wrist.

THE LAW Teen found in possession of this type of image on his/her cell phone can be charged with possession of child pornography and the sender with distribution. If convicted, you have to register as a sex offender

SEXTING CASES In Fort Wayne, Indiana a teenage boy was indicted on felony obscenity charges for allegedly sending a photo of his private parts to several female classmates. Another boy was charged with child pornography in a similar case.

CELEBRITY SEXTING Antonella Barba received notoriety beyond American Idol when a series of racy photos of her surfaced on the Internet. She was quoted as saying that they "were photos of my personal life that got exploited without my consent

CELEBRITY SEXTING Miley Cyrus is the most famous to have been involved in "sexting" when racy images intended for her boyfriend at the time were leaked by someone who hacked her phone

CELEBRITY SEXTING Vanessa Hudgens' life has been turned upside down, especially with new saucy photos of her surfacing on the Internet.  Just as the "High School Musical star" thought she was over the worst of the uproar surrounding her naked photo scandal, she got slapped with a fresh stack of sexy photos.

TRAGIC TEXTING Brittany swallowed 23 pills in an effort to take her life. "I believe my daughter tried to commit suicide because she was so ashamed to go back and face her peers knowing that she was going to be harassed, and teased and bullied over this incident,“ Brittany, 13, had sent a topless photo to a boy.

WHAT CAN TEENS DO? If you receive a racy photo do not forward it. Speak to the person who sent it, if possible If you have sent a racy photo-STOP! May have to speak to a trusted adult about how to handle the situation
