Presentation transcript:

1-7 Adding and Subtracting Integers You’ll Learn: To add and subtract integers and to solve problems involving integers.

New Vocabulary Additive Inverses- two numbers whose sum is 0

Adding Integers The sum of two positive numbers is positive. 3 + 5 = 8 The sum of two negative numbers is negative. -3 + (-5) To find the sum of numbers with different signs… 1. Find the absolute value of each number 2. Subtract the smaller number from the bigger 3. The sum has the sign of the integer with the greater absolute value -3 + 5 = 2 3 + (-5) = -2

Adding Integers with a Number Line Use a number line to find each sum. 5 + (-4) -5 + (-2)

Subtracting Integers To subtract an integer, add its opposite. Find 4- 6 Find -2 – (-5)

Let’s Practice Adding with a Number Line! -8 + 1 -1 + (-7) -6 +6

Let’s Practice Adding! -97 + (-65) 21 + (-39) 22 + (-22)

Let’s Practice Subtracting! -6 – 1 14 – (-7) -3 – (-3)

Real Life Connection In the game of billiards called 14.1, players lose points if they receive penalties. Find the difference in the scores of the winner with 50 points and the opponent with -17 points.
