Examine one evolutionary explanation of behavior. Today’s Agenda: The Genetics of Psychology—Intelligence HW: None

51 participants (validity?) IQ “Test” 51 participants (validity?) Range: 91-200 Mean: 132.16 Median: 133 Mode: 141 (5) 5 participants responded affirmatively when asked about the accuracy of the test measuring intelligence. “Yes, it made you use your deepest level of analysis and problem solving” “No, it didn't ask me about anything that had to do with things I have learned in school. It also asked no questions about things that could apply to multiple professions.” How do you think your parents/grandparents would do? Could that impact YOUR score? Regardless of your thoughts about this individual test: is the ability to reason, problem solve, conduct complex mental tasks (or however you would like to define intelligence) genetic? https://www.ted.com/talks/james_flynn_why_our_iq_levels_are_higher_than_our_grandparents/transcript

A man has to get a fox, a chicken, and a sack of corn across a river. IQ “Test” A man has to get a fox, a chicken, and a sack of corn across a river. He has a rowboat, and it can only carry him and one other thing. If the fox and the chicken are left together, the fox will eat the chicken. If the chicken and the corn are left together, the chicken will eat the corn. How does the man do it?

Try these…what are we measuring?

Focus on the aspect of Nature vs. Nurture Q: What is intelligence Focus on the aspect of Nature vs. Nurture Q:  What is intelligence?  Can we define it? What types of skills was the test that you took trying to measure? Considering the definitions above, do you think that the test was measuring intelligence? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xTz3QjcloI
