Events leading to the TEXAS REVOLUTION

The Fredonian rebellion Date: Dec. 21st 1826- Jan. 23, 1827 Details: was the first attempt by Anglo settlers in Texas to become independent from Mexico. The settlers in East Texas were led by Empresario Haden Edwards. Edwards was upset that there were people living on the land that was suppose to be part of his land grant. Outcome: The rebellion was quickly broken up, but Mexico became even more suspicious of the United States and the Anglo settlers in Texas.

Mier y Teran Report Date: Early 1828 As a result of the Fredonian Rebellion, Mexico sent Mier y Teran to see what was happening in Texas. After investigating he reported back to Mexico that Mexican influence in Texas was decreasing as you moved Northeast through Texas and that Anglo’s outnumbered Tejano’s 10 to 1 in some areas. He recommended that… Mexico increase trade with Texas to discourage them from trading with the US instead Mexico should send more soldiers to Texas to keep control of the region Mexico should encourage more immigration to Texas from European countries and Mexico.

Law of april 6, 1830 Date: April 6, 1830 Goal: to stop immigration from the United States to Texas, based on what Mier y Teran had found in TX. This law also made it illegal for settlers to bring more slaves into Texas and they began to tax all U.S imports coming into TX Mexico hoped this law would strengthen their control over Texas BUT instead in angered many Tejanos and U.S settlers.

Conflicts at anahuac Date: Fall of 1831 In response the law of April 6, 1830 Mexico sent troops into Texas Conflicts between soldiers and settlers increased over the new trade restrictions. War nearly broke out when ships ignored the new rules, but luckily Stephen F. Austin was able to convince Mexico it was not an act of war. Texans became even more angry after the events at Anahuac.

Turtle bayou resolutions Date: Spring of 1832 Details: People who didn’t want to start a war with Mexico wrote a resolution that stated that the events at Anahuac were not a rebellion against Mexico. They stated they were just defending their rights and the Constitution of 1824 They expressed support for Santa Anna

Stephen f. Austin’s arrest Stephen F. Austin went to Mexico to propose the changes that Texans wanted made to the constitution like allowing immigration from the US again and making Texas a separate state from Coahuila Austin had to wait a long time before Congress would consider their proposal, while waiting he wrote a letter to the government in San Antonio telling them to start organizing a local government for Texas. Santa Anna agreed to SFA’s proposal but on his way home he was arrested because of what he had written in the letter. He spent nearly a year in prison and couldn’t return to Texas until July 1835 As a result of this many people back in Texas worried for his safety and increased tensions with Mexico further.
