Presentation transcript:

Pre-Notes Activity Direction: Fold your index card in half (like a book). Write your name on top. Answer the question below using only the left side of your card (2-3 sentences). QUESTION: Based from what you know, how does the heart transport blood/oxygen to the rest of our body.

The Heart: Introduction

NOTES – THE HEART Location: cavity between the lungs, center of chest roughly the size of a fist

HEART CHAMBERS 4 chambers Atrium (left/right atria) divided by the INTER-ATRIAL SEPTUM Function of Atria: receives blood from veins (pig heart)

LEFT ATRIA: receives blood from pulmonary veins – coming from lungs – rich in oxygen RIGHT ATRIA: receives blood from superior & inferior vena cava – blood that’s been used – oxygen poor – high in CO2

Ventricles (left/right) muscular pumps – divided by INTER-VENTRICULAR SEPTUM (pig heart)

LEFT VENTRICLE: receives blood (O2 rich) from the left atrium and pumps it to the body through the AORTA RIGHT VENTRICLE: receives blood from the right atria (O2 poor) and pumps it to the lungs through the PULMONARY ARTERIES

Systemic Circulation heart (CO2) lungs  heart (O2)  body 

Post-Notes Activity QUESTION: Direction: To answer the questions below, turn to a partner(s) and discuss what you feel is the best answer. After coming to an agreement, write your answer on the RIGHT side of your card (3-5 sentences/ 3 minutes). QUESTION: *Based from what you’ve learned in today’s notes, how does the heart transport blood/ oxygen to the rest of our body.

2. The pulmonary artery is blocked. Direction: Using your notes, predict what will happen in the next step of the blood flow if each of the following situation occurs. Work individually/ write your answers in the back of the card/ 5minutes. For example: “The mistral valve in the left atrium is malfunctioning” A: It’s possible that no blood will get to the left ventricle. The aorta is blocked. 2. The pulmonary artery is blocked. 3. There is small hole in the septum separating the two ventricles (2 lower chamber).

Review What are the 3 parts of the cardiovascular system? heart – blood – blood vessels What do arteries do? Take blood AWAY from the heart What are the 3 layers of an artery? Tunica externa /connective tissue (elastin) – tunica media/smooth muscle – tunica intima/endothelium What do veins do? Bring blood TOWARD the heart What do veins have that arteries don’t? VALVES – (veins & arteries both have the same layers except the muscular layer is smaller)

What exchanges material between blood and the body’s cells? CAPILLARIES How big are they? microscopic in size
