How to Write a Thematic Essay? Global History and Geography 10th Grade Boys/Girls November 27, 2018

Parts of an Essay Introduction: Body Usually the 1st Paragraph Introduces the topic of discussion Contains the thesis statement, which is the answer to the question Body Explanation of the thesis Contains one or more paragraphs. Number of paragraphs depends on the thesis points.

Body Paragraphs: Conclusion Starts with a topic sentence This sentence tells the reader about what is to be said in the paragraph Explanation of the thesis with support like examples and other relevant data. Concluding remark Conclusion Restate the thesis in a modified format. Add any opinion that you might have.

Example of an Essay Theme: “Civilization Achievements of Past Societies”

The essay Introduction: A civilization is a complex culture with developed states in its social structure, where all or a few of the following characteristics are present: villages, towns or cities, some form of government, clearly defined organization of labor or social classes, organized religion, system of record keeping or written language, art/architecture, roads, bridges, and other like these. Some of the past societies have made tremendous civilization achievements in science and technology1, medicine2, art and architecture3, and literature4. The legacy of those achievements is still felt in many modern societies. Topic Introduction Thesis Statement

Body- Paragraph #1 [science & Technology] Topic Sentence Some ancient societies came up with scientific and technological innovations that we still use. The ancient Mesopotamians invented the wheel, which provided speed to human civilization. The Egyptians invented an accurate calendar of 365 days. They have also developed many techniques of geometry. They perfected the knowledge of mummification. The Indians developed the system of decimal numbers with the concept of zero that are still in use. The Chinese developed the system of paper making and rudder for guiding a boat's movement. All these scientific and technological innovations are of great benefit for human societies. Explanation Concluding Remark

Body- Paragraph # 2 [medical advancement] Topic Sentence Some societies developed highly sophisticated techniques in medical science in ancient times that our contemporary societies only learned recently. The Egyptians perfected the knowledge of mummification. Indian doctors during Gupta Empire developed techniques of cosmetic surgery, sterilization of surgical instruments, and vaccination for small pox. The Chinese developed acupuncture to help people get relieved of pain. These are definitely important achievements for human civilization. Explanation Concluding Remark

Body- Paragraph # 3 [art & architecture] Topic Sentence Societies of the ancient past also made tremendous progress in art and architecture. The ancient Mesopotamians built huge ziggurats and Egyptians built pyramids which are wonders to modern people. The Greeks and Romans built elaborate buildings with columns, arches and domes. The Greeks and Romans also made idealistic art and statues. Many other societies made excellent progress in art and architecture. Explanation Concluding Remark

Body- Paragraph # 4 [literature] Topic Sentence Past societies also made many literary achievements. The literary achievements were directly related to the development of written languages. The ancient Mesopotamians developed cuneiform and their most important literary work written in cuneiform is the "Epic of Gilgamesh". The Egyptians developed hieroglyphics that they extensively used for many works related to their religion and business. The Greeks borrowed Phoenician-invented alphabets and used them to write their literary works. Greek poet Homer wrote Iliad and Odyssey. Greek playwrights wrote tragedies and comedies. The Indians developed written language called Sanskrit, which poet Kalidasa used to write Meghduta and Shakuntala. Chinese developed even block printing to print world's first book. Generally the literary achievements of the past people are still of use. Explanation Concluding Remark

Conclusion The ancient civilizations made significant intellectual and cultural advancements in science and technology, medicine, art and architecture and in literature. Many of these achievements have long lasting impact. The later developments in human history are dependent and indebted to many of the achievements of ancient times.
