Objective: Explore ways to infuse UDL Principles into instruction in order to ensure access to instruction.

3 Networks = 3 UDL Principles UDL tip: This graphic offers information in text, visuals, & color. 3 Networks = 3 UDL Principles Neuroscience shows us that there are three networks in the brain that are associated with learning. The 3 Principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) address these 3 brain networks in this way: - Recognition Networks – the “what” of learning; associated UDL principle is the Principle of Representation = we need to provide “Multiple Means of Representation;” - Strategic Networks – the “how” of learning; associated UDL principle is the Principle of Action and Expression = we need to provide “Multiple Means of Action & Expression;” - Affective Networks – the “why” of learning; associated UDL principle is the Principle of Engagement = we need to provide “Multiple Means of Engagement.”

Teachers create, edit, and save resource-rich texts. Although UDL has a firm basis in technology we still want to consider a hierarchy of supports. Foldables represent the use of paper folded in a variety of ways to support all manner of content. Dinah Zike has many online and low tech resources to support foldables. You may want to check out her Wiki. Color support: Research indicates that some students are able to read and process information when the background is colored or if a different color font is used. This can be facilitated by changing the color background in Microsoft Word or providing handouts on different colored paper Reading Guides support color highlighting, focus and visual tracking Highlighter tape can also work to support reading with color. If you are not familiar with highlighter tape it is similar to adhesive tape- only it is easily removed. mmurphy@bcps.org

Readability How can you use readability statistics to provide multiple means of representation? Word Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Word Options. Click Proofing. Make sure Check grammar with spelling is selected. Under When correcting grammar in Word, select the Show readability statistics check box.

Summary UDL is based on what we’ve learned in neuroscience and the learning sciences about HOW we learn. There are 3 brain networks associated with learning: Affective, Recognition, Strategic and 3 UDL Principles offering multiple means of: Engagement, Representation and Action & Expression. There are 3 Guidelines for each UDL Principle = 9 UDL Guidelines moving from access to comprehension and deep engagement. We can plan a UDL Curriculum (Goals, Assessment, Methods, Materials/Media) by asking questions based on the UDL Guidelines.
