1-10-18 Plate Tectonics Lesson 1

Do Now: Copy the following questions in your notebook. How many earthquakes have occurred over the last 7 days? 24 hours? 1 hour? What patterns do you see in the occurrence of the earthquakes? What patterns do you see in the geographic location of the earthquakes? View the map of earthquakes that have occurred over the last 7 days (https://earthquakestoday.info).

Plate Tectonics: An Introduction https://www.pbslearningmedia.org/asset/ess05_vid_plateintro/ What was the name of the Super Continent? Pangaea How long ago did we have this Super Continent? 200 million years ago (mya) Why did the Super Continent break apart? Movement of tectonic plates Assuming Earth will stay intact, predict what it will look like (continents and oceans) 200 million years from now. Answers may vary: Africa will move toward Eurasia; the Americas will move further away from Africa/Europe

NASA’s Predicted Earth

Student Work: Become an Expert Each student will be assigned a vocabulary word. Each student will become an expert on his/her word and teach their word to the class. You should include: the word how to say the word correctly the scientific definition a "kid-friendly" definition how everyone will remember the meaning of their term You have ~15 minutes to complete your research.

Example: Plate Tectonics Pronunciation: [PLAYT] + [TEK] + [TON] + [IKS] Scientific Definition: Theory that Earth’s surface is broken into large rigid pieces that move with respect to each other. “Kid Friendly” Definition: a theory that Earth is broken into pieces that move around How to remember: Think of breaking an egg into pieces.

Student Work: Teach! As each student teaches their term to the class, write down a working definition to remember/master the terminology.

Closure: Exit Ticket Complete the exit ticket and submit as you leave.
