Overall Goal: Properties For example, why is water a liquid but methane a gas? To understand properties, we need to know molecular structure, which means we need to understand bonding, which is why we studied atomic structure. Water vs liquid nitrogen

Chemical Bond Force that holds groups of two or more atoms together and makes them function as a unit. Atoms will bond if the molecule is more stable than the two separated atoms (lower energy state).

Ionic Bonding

Way to Remember vs. Cause Metal atoms do not “want” to lose electrons to “become like Noble gases”. BUT Electron configurations of metal ions in ionic compounds are the same as those of Noble gases.
