20.1: SPECIES INTERACTIONS (SYMBIOSIS). Symbiosis- close ecological relationship between two or more organisms of different species that live in direct.
How Species Interact with Each Other Environmental Science Spring 2011.
1 Study of interactions of living organisms with one another and with their physical environment.
Ecological Relationships. Competition and Predation Competition – occurs when organisms of the same or different species attempt to use an ecological.
Mutualism Both species benefit “+ +” relationship Examples – Ants protect aphids that provide them food – Clown fish / sea anemones.
SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIPS WORDS 10-15
Ecology Chapter 2. What is Ecology? Ecology is the study of interactions that take place between organisms and their environment. Ex. Bird on a tree limb.

Relationships in an Ecosystem. SYMBIOSIS A relationship where 2 species live closely together.
Symbiotic Relationships.  SYMBIOSIS refers to the relationship between organisms of different species that show an intimate encounter with each other.
How organisms interact. Predator/Prey interactions  Predation - The act of one organism killing another for food.  Ex. Lions eating zebras.

1.3 Interactions among living things. Adapting to the environment – Natural selection – A process by which characteristics that make an individual better.
 I can name the 3 types of relationships in ecology  I can list the 2 types of nutritional relationships  I can define “auto”  I can define “troph”

Key Concepts Coevolution Predation Mutualism Commensalism Parisitism Herbivory Relationships are key…

Coevolution Back-and-forth evolutionary adjustment between two species that interact Example:predator-prey relationship Adaptations are made in response to the other animal

Predation What makes them a predator? -killing another for food Characteristics: Usually larger animals but sometimes small Ex: microscopic organisms

Predation continued Most animals are both predators & prey Few species are not considered prey Ex.: killer whales

Can’t we all just get along? Yes! Mutualism Can’t we all just get along? Yes! A relationship between two species - both species benefit Ex. Clown fish is protected & attracts food for the sea anemone

commensalism Two species relationship: one species benefits and the other is neither harmed nor helped

One organism feeds a host Usually larger live on or in their host Parisitism One organism feeds a host Usually larger live on or in their host Can harm the host Hosts defend by immune systems or behaviors

only consume plant material do not necessarily kill plant Herbivory only consume plant material do not necessarily kill plant Some plants have defense mechanisms that prevent the animal from feeding on them.
