Echolocation and Feeding By Christine Solsman

What is Echolocation? Organisms with echolocation can locate and discriminate objects by projecting high-frequency sound waves and listening for echoes. The echoes from these sounds provide information about the seafloor, the shorelines, underwater obstacles, water depth, and the presence of other animals underwater. Echolocation is extremely sensitive and some scientists think it may provide toothed whales and dolphins with a three dimensional view of the world.

Baleen Whale Echolocation There is no evidence that baleen whales echolocate the way toothed whales do. Since their ears are positioned slightly apart the echo that returns enters each ear at a different time and a different loudness.

Echolocation for Communication and Navigation

Echolocation for Hunting The whale can determine the distance to an object, its size, shape, the speed that the object is travelling, and its texture. Scientists believe to be more stealthy, killer whales rely on sound around them and keep their echolocation to a minimum to not scare of any prey, thus giving them great hearing.
