Do Now Solve for y: 4y + 2x = 7 3x - 2y = 12 y = 2x + 3 Solve for x: 2. 7(1 - x) = 3x - 7(x + 2)

Literal Equations Some equations contain more than one variable. At times you will need to solve these equations for one of the variables. This is the same as “isolating the variable”, except you are Isolating a different variable (not always x!)

Level 1: Solving Literal Equations STEPS: SOLVE THE EQUATION: 1.) Circle the variable you are solving for 2.) What’s happening with that variable? 3.) Work backwards to solve for the variable (MOVE EVERYTHING AWAY FROM THE VARIABLE!)

Level 1 Practice SOLVE THE EQUATION FOR THE GIVEN VARIABLE: 2.) 3.) d + 3n = 1, for n 4.)

Level 1 You Try SOLVE THE EQUATION FOR THE GIVEN VARIABLE: 5.) ax - b = c, for x 6.) 15x + 1 = y, for x 7.) P = 2L + 2W, for W 8.) 7x + 3y = m, for y

Level 1 You Try SOLVE THE EQUATION FOR THE GIVEN VARIABLE: 9.) 10.) 11.)

Level 2: Solving Literal Equations STEPS: SOLVE THE EQUATION: 1.) Circle the variable you are solving for 2.) What’s happening with that variable? 3.) Work backwards to solve for the variable (MOVE EVERYTHING AWAY FROM THE VARIABLE!)

Level 2 Practice SOLVE THE EQUATION FOR THE GIVEN VARIABLE: 1.) 2.) 4.) 3y + d = m, for y q 3.)
