Introduction Epoxy & Methacrylate Adhesives Epoxy A – Cured at RT Epoxy A – Heat Cured Methacrylate A – Cured at RT Methacrylate B – Cured at RT Common Substrates in the Marine, Wind Energy, and General Composites Markets Vinyl Ester Polyester DCPD (DiCycloPentaDiene) Epoxy Infused Epoxy ASTM Standard D1002 Instron Testing Machine Model 5567 Mirna Robles – SAMPE Brazil 2017
Procedure Substrates 40 different types of specimens to test for single lap shear strength Unidirectional fiberglass with 0° fiber rovings orientation with respect to the lap shear test Unidirectional fiberglass with 90° fiber rovings orientation with respect to the lap shear test Lap shear test Mirna Robles – SAMPE Brazil 2017
Procedure Bonding Specimen preparation per ASTM D1002 requirements. Dispensing performed by using cartridges and hand held dispensing guns for specific mix ratio for each type of adhesive. Bonding preformed under normal conditions: 23°C RT & <70% of RH. Epoxy Adhesive A Epoxy A – Cured for 24 hours @ RT Epoxy A – Heat Cured for 3 hours @ 50°C Average of 3 samples for each type of specimen Methacrylate Adhesives Methacrylate A – Cured for 24 hours at RT Methacrylate B – Cured for 24 hours at RT Average of 5 samples for each type of specimen Mirna Robles – SAMPE Brazil 2017
Results *The results of the lap shear strength tests obtained in this study are used with the only intention of comparing the different types of specimens among them, and not for stating the strength values of the adhesives themselves. Mirna Robles – SAMPE Brazil 2017
Results Specimens made with Epoxy adhesive A on DCPD HLU substrate cured for 3 hrs @ 50°C. The test was run @ 0° orientation, showing a cohesive single lap shear failure at an average of 3.01 MPa with an average force of 4.44 kN. Specimens made with Methacrylate adhesive B on HLU DCPD substrate cured for 24 hrs @ RT. The test was run @ 90° orientation, showing a cohesive single lap shear failure at an average of 4.75 MPa with an average force of 7.11 kN.. Mirna Robles – SAMPE Brazil 2017

Conclusions In general, for achieving the best bonding strengths, the fiber rovings in the composite substrate must be oriented at 90° with respect to the possible shearing effect of the bonded area (most possible debonding direction). Each one of the types of adhesive showed their best shear strength when bonding each one of these substrates: Each one of the types of adhesive showed their worst shear strength when bonding each one of these substrates: *The results of the lap shear strength tests obtained in this study are used with the only intention of comparing the different types of specimens among them, and not for stating the strength values of the adhesives themselves.
