Captain Walton’s Story ??? ??? Captain Walton and his men rescue Victor Frankenstein. Captain Walton is exploring in the Artic Circle. Victor Frankenstein tells his story to Captain Walton and the crew members.

Frankenstein’s Story The monster kills Elizabeth and Victor decides to follow him forever. Influence = ??? ??? He discovers how to do it. Victor is a student who thinks about making a person. Chapter Eight is thought of as the climax of the novel. the point at which Victor is his most vulnerable, and most enraged. Highest tension. But where did Mary Shelley get her ideas for this climatic chapter? What were her influences, and how does this influencer change and what she is creating? Influence = science and events from Mary Shelley’s time

What is happening in this painting? Talk to your partner What is happening in this painting? This painting is called “The Nightmare” lying on her back, she takes a position believed to encourage nightmares

What are the themes in the painting? We discuss fears and the psychological effects dreaming can have on a person.  Also, that there is a sense of helplessness in the figure of the woman. She is at the mercy of the incubus and seems given to complete surrender.  The colour palette, applied with oil paint, consists mostly of dark colours—black, deep greys, shades of brown, and blood red—with the exception of the young woman and the bed which she is laying upon, which are made up of more heavenly whites and gold tones. (Tone and Mood) woman= good The horse could possibly be viewed as the ‘mare’ of the ‘nightmare’: more revealing is that the origins of the word mare are derived from the Old English word maere, which referred to a goblin or incubus. Another meaning of nightmare derives from mara, a Scandinavian mythological term referring to a spirit sent to torment or suffocate sleepers. The early meaning of “nightmare” included the sleeper’s experience of weight on the chest combined with sleep paralysis, dyspnea, or a feeling of dread.

? The Nightmare Frankenstein Painted by Fuseli in 1781 Written by Shelley in 1818 ? Can you find the corresponding (Same) part of the story that imitates the painting?

“The bed was a mass of blood “The bed was a mass of blood. Elizabeth`s body lay across it, her head twisted at an unusual angle. There was a gaping, gory hole in her chest. On her face –her dead face –there was a look of shock and agony.” -page 129

The Nightmare Frankenstein Painted by Fuseli in 1781 Written by Shelley in 1818 Shelley knew of this painting. Her parents were friends with the artist.
