Adventure Literature Fall 2016

Learn and earn credits outdoors! Adventure Literature students not only read Thoreau, but like him, they travel to the mountains, the river, or the seashore; they hike and climb and kayak; and they write about their experiences. These courses provide the opportunity to learn, have fun, have the experience of a lifetime, and get credits to satisfy General Education requirements for graduation.

“Exploring the Literature of the Chesapeake Bay and Its Watershed” 4.5 credits of English 181A that counts for GH and US requirements. Class meets each Wednesday from 6:00-7:30p.m. Sept. 10: Canoe the Susquehanna River at Harrisburg with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation Sept. 22-25: Weekend on the Bay on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, featuring trips in historic boats, great food, and music Oct. 29: Paddle the Lower Susquehanna to ancient Native American rock art Nov. 12: Paddle the West Branch of the Susquehanna River Course Fee of $400 , which covers all transportation, fees, and gear rental for all four trips!

“Exploring the Literature of Cape Cod” 4.5 credits of ENGL 181B (will count for GH and US requirements) Class meets each Tuesday from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. November 17-23: Trip to Cape Cod, where we will stay at the 1100-acre Wellfleet Wildlife Sanctuary and spend the week meeting with some of today’s Cape Cod writers and walking in the footsteps of the Cape’s classic writers. We will walk the beaches in search of cold-stunned sea turtles and learn first-hand about the natural history and culture of one of the most storied places in the United States. Course Fee of $450 covers transportation, fees, gear rental, and food while we’re on the Cape.
