Interpreting Political Cartoons Historical Method

Learning goals: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to: formulate different types of questions evaluate the credibility of sources and information analyse information, employing concepts and approaches appropriate to historical inquiry

Key terms Here are some key terms you will come across in your analysis of political cartoons: Symbol – any item that is drawn to represent something else (ex. a beaver to represent Canada) Device – a technique used by a cartoonist to emphasize a point or show an emotion (ex. sarcasm, irony, humour etc…) Message – the goal of a cartoon is to convey a specific message or point of view without actually saying it
