Food Chains/Webs
Energy Energy from sunlight is changed to chemical energy in plants. Energy is then transferred from organism to organism in food chains/webs.
Energy continued… Changing the environment may alter the amount of energy provided to living organisms. (Forest fires, chopping down trees)
Food Chains and Food Webs A model used to show the transfer of energy and matter among organisms. They show relationships among organisms. Multiple food chains make up food webs.
Battle at Kruger One of the most epic food chain battles caught on camera!
Energy Flow Types of energy changing and moving through the environment.
10% of the energy is transferred to the next level of the food chain/web.
Producer A plant. Plants PRODUCE their own food through photosynthesis.
Consumer An organism that gets their food from eating another organism.
Primary Consumer The first thing that has to eat to get energy. Herbivores (only eat plants)
Secondary Consumer The second organism that has to eat to get energy. Often Omnivores. Can eat both meat and plants.
Tertiary Consumers Top of the food chain. Almost total carnivores. Eat only meat.
Decomposer An organism that breaks down and consumes dead organisms.
Predator An organism that hunts down and kills prey for food.
Prey An organism that is hunted and killed for another organism’s food.
