Least to greatest ATOMS are the smallest unit of a substance MOLECULES are made of atoms held together by chemical bonds (they can be from one or more elements) ELEMENTS are a substance made of ONE type of ATOM COMPOUNDS are molecules of two or more elements Least to greatest

How small is an atom? Scale of the Universe 2 http://scaleofuniverse.com/ How small is an atom?

All matter is made of atoms, including all living things. Does it matter?

Matter is classified as organic or inorganic based upon its chemical composition. All living systems are composed of organic compounds that contain carbon combined with hydrogen and various other elements such as nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur. Organic matter

Carbon Many organic compounds are large and complex (like you). All organic compounds come from living or once living matter. If all living matter contains carbon, then all organic molecules must contain carbon. Carbon

The prefix “in” means “not”; therefore, inorganic means not organic. Inorganic compounds do not come from living or once living matter and usually do not contain carbon. Inorganic

You may see the word organic used in grocery stores to describe foods such as vegetables, fruits, dairy, etc. This use of the word organic means farming without pesticides. In chemistry, organic compounds have nothing to do with organic farming. Just a note…
