Art is communicative Warhol and Basquait

Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat

Analyze What? Who? When? How? Why?

Why does he use repetition so much? I love Los Angeles. I love Hollywood. They're beautiful. Everybody's plastic, but I love plastic. I want to be plastic.   Why does he use repetition so much? Is his work all surface? Or is there anything ‘deeper’ going on? Why is he important? How did his background(upbringing) influence his work?

I don't think about art when I'm working. I try to think about life. What words does he use in his work? Where do you think he finds them? What do they mean? Does Basquiat’s multicultural upbringing influence his painting? How? How do you think he works? – describe the way he applies the paint onto the canvas. Why is he important?

Basquait and Warhol Why were they photographed together in boxing gloves? What is different about the work they created together? (compared to their solo work) What can you say about the use of text in their combined work?

Sketch Some of the imagery/text that you have seen from each artist. Work in colour if appropriate.
