The Research Paper/ Lead-ins

Underline/Italicize Always underline major works Anything you can go to a book store and buy Any work within a larger work you put “quotation marks” Movies=underline TV show=underline Episode = quotation marks We don’t know what will be on the EOC, it may just be passage A and passage B

Example Stephen Crane is an author that represents Realism. “’Give me deh can. See?’ said the man threateningly.” Crane’s use of dialect in his dialogue is a clear example of Realism.

3 types of quote lead-ins Somebody says In “Maggie Girl of the Streets” Crane’s character says, “_________” Blended Lead-In Take you own words, put the quote in the middle and end with your words Crane’s character uses the Irish dialect of, “’Give me deh can. See?’” which is a clear sign of Realism. Sentence Lead-In Say what you want to say about the quote Stephen Crane in “Maggie Girl of the Streets” shows the Irish dialect of the New York neighborhood: “’Give me deh can. See?’”

INTERNAL (Cont.) What does this look like? In a recent article in Time magazine, the author states, “Poverty is an issue that is on the rise with no signs of slowing down” (Johnson 23). Red = Lead-In Blue = Parenthetical Documentation

Re-Write Real, everyday people Intense description Use of setting and dialect to push Realism Real, everyday events

Quotations/citations A quote is anything you pull from a source (magazine, book, website, newspaper, etc.) to use as evidence in your paper. A QUOTE IS NOT JUST SOMETHING SOMEONE SAYS IN A BOOK. EVERY QUOTE YOU USE MUST BE CITED IN YOUR PAPER AND RESPONCES!!!!

Internal/External Every Quote you use MUST be cited TWO ways: 1. Internally (Right next to the Quote) 2. Externally (On the Works Cited Page)

QUOTATIONs/CITATIONS AGAIN, EVERY QUOTE YOU USE MUST BE CITED IN YOUR PAPER!

Quotations/Citations You must cite quotes two places: internally (in the paper when you say it) and externally (at the end of your paper on your Works Cited) page. If you have not cited these quotes in this manner --- THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM.

INTERNAL Internal documentation – Information about where a quote came from that must immediately follow the quote in your paper (as in same sentence) Lead In – an introduction to your quote

Internal (cont.) To use a quote in your paper, you MUST have the following information included either in your lead- in or in your parenthetical documentation: 1. Author’s Last Name or First Word of Article if there is no author 2. Page Number

INTERNAL (CONT.) AGAIN. . . EVERY QUOTE USED IN YOUR PAPER MUST HAVE A LEAD-IN!!!!!

EXTERNAL External Documentation is a citation that takes place on a Works Cited Page at the end of your paper. Your Works Cited Page is always the last page of your paper.
