Setting the Stage Warm Up On page 54 in your Interactive Notebook – under the Setting the Stage Worksheet – write the following prompt then answer it in three sentences. Be prepared to share with the class. How might the population of the United States around 1790 impact the formation of its new government? State a claim then back it up with one piece of evidence and elaboration from your homework.

Writing A Claim Must state your main argument. Must explain why you believe your argument is a good one. Must NOT be in the first person: “I think, I feel, I know…”. Must be stated in one complete sentence.

Claim Statement: Part One Sometimes it is best to start with: “This paper will argue that…” Then you finish that statement (You will then go back and cross off “This paper will argue that” and start with the first word that comes after.

Claim Statement: Part 2 Add your three main reasons to your claim. This is the “because” section “This paper will argue that [claim] because [A], [B], [C]. Finally, rewrite your claim statement. Remove: “This paper will argue that” and change the way it starts Look for: Commonly Confused Words Dead Words Spelling errors Grammar errors
