Extended Definition Essay Mrs. Puder English 0300 – 0310 HCCS – Katy Campus

An Extended Definition Essay Is an essay where the writer gives his personal definition of a term through the thesis statement, and the body paragraphs of the essay prove the definition stated. Some methods of development to help define a term are: History/Background – Search the origin of the term, and illustrate it. Narration – illustrating the term through a short story. Description – describing what the term looks, sounds like, tastes like, feels like. Illustration-Example – use short or long examples to illustrate the term. Classification/Category – put the term into categories, and explain each term. Comparison/Synonym – explain how the term is like, similar to other terms like it. Use synonyms. 7) Contrast/Negation – explain how the term is different from other like it.
