Hold the Flag High 5th Grade

What are the risks in helping others? Big Question What are the risks in helping others?

Sequence Sequence is the order that events happen in a selection. When you read, think about what comes first, next, and last. Several events can occur at the same time. Words such as meanwhile and during give clues that two events are happening at the same time. You can remember sequence by making a time line.

Vocabulary Canteen Rebellion Confederacy Stallion Glory Union Quarrel

Canteen A container that holds drinks

Confederacy A group of people, states, or countries that work together

Glory Praise, honor

Quarrel A fight

Rebellion A conflict that leads to war

Stallion A male horse

Union States that are united as one country

Literary Nonfiction Tells the story of a true event. It sometimes uses elements that are usually used in fiction, such as dialogue, illustrations, descriptions, and character thoughts.

Explore What did African American soldiers do during the Civil War? Where and when did they fight? What risks did African American soldiers take?

Guide Questions Reread half of page 211. Use words such as first, next, then, and finally to list the event that happened. How do pages 210 and 211 give the reader hints or clues about the events that will happen later in the story?

Guide Questions What do Sergeant Carney and Ned, the drummer boy, have in common? How are they different? Compare and contrast Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and Carney and Ned. Use the text to support. Do you think the officers expect that some soldiers will die? Have you ever witnessed an inspiring speech? Discuss what you think Shaw talked about with his soldiers.

Guide Questions Do you think that many soldiers were shot and killed? How well does the author describe this scene? What sequence of events led to Carney carrying the flag?

Guide Questions Infer how Carney feels about his country and what his personality is like. What events caused Carney to be the flag bearer? Why did Carney tried so hard to carry the flag?

Guide Questions What is the outcome of the Civil War? What is the theme of this nonfiction piece?
