Learning Objectives: DES Staff will have knowledge/ understanding refreshed through brief overview of RTI methodology. DES Staff will understand changes and updates in HCPS processes and procedures regarding exceptional education, specifically in regards to behavior. DES Staff will have a basic introduction to more thorough information to come during the October staff meeting. There will be a comprehensive presentation on the RTI/ Eligibility Process and Procedures at that time.

What is RTI? Response to Intervention (RtI) is a multi-tiered instructional framework based on the philosophy that all students can be successful.  Focus is on data driven, research/ evidenced based intervention. In the DARK AGES- Students would have to qualify for special ed to receive additional interventions and supports. RTI NOW- provides additional academic and behavioral support in a proactive manner with students meeting minimal qualifications to show evidence of need.

So…what is different this year? Vocabulary: “Child Find” Meeting Objectivity: Administrator as Elig. Chair, all other roles present components. Prevention: Behavioral support is to be proactive rather than reactive and can be started right away based on last year’s data rather than waiting. (Central Office Directive) RTI: Website and RTI expedited referral form (Academic and Behavior) https://sites.google.com/a/henrico.k12.va.us/dumbar ton-elementary-rti/

RTI Behavior Interventions: RTI Small Group Counseling based on Tier 2 Needs. 2 groups per month (1 K-2) (1 3-5). NOT during lunch time= Shorter term groups (3 sessions instead of 4-6) due to more time for focused group instruction. This year ALL students with 504 Plans (Behavioral or Academic Needs) and Tier 2 group will receive: (From School Counselor/ RTI Chair) Small Group Counseling Support (repeat groups if necessary) Morning Behavior “Pep Talks” or CICO Beginning of year meeting/ touch base with teacher Ongoing consultation with teachers, admin and other staff coordinated by the school counselor (Behavior RTI Chair) Assistance with parent communication (as needed) Progress monitoring Calm Down Cubbies (as appropriate/ needed) Assistance with “tweaks” to support students in the classroom
