My Professional History -Teaching for 20 years -18 years at AWR -Been in 6th grade for 16 years

Daily Schedule 6F 40 minutes of Social Studies 40 minutes of Reading Workshop 40 minutes of Writing Workshop 6D

Writing Writing Workshop model is used to teach writing. Mini Lesson Independent Work/Partner Collaboration One to One Teacher Conference Students will write in the following genres: realistic fiction, literary essay, informational essay, argument based essay, myth, and memoir. Writing partnerships are an essential part of class. Students will use a writing notebook and binder. Each evening’s homework is to continue the work started in class for an extra 20 minutes. Most stages of the writing process are graded. Stages of the writing process are weighted differently.

Reading Reading is taught using the Reading Workshop model. Mini Lesson/Read Aloud Independent Reading/Partner Collaboration One to One Teacher Conference Students select independent reading books in a variety of genres. 40 Book Goal for the Year/Raffle Genre Goals Scholastic Students learn to self assess, select “just-right” books, and build reading stamina. Students have daily opportunities to talk about their books (read books independently, with partners, and in book clubs). Students will use a reading notebook and binder. Reading responses are weighted 2 times.

Student Expectations for Reading Read for 20-25 minutes per day in classroom. Read for 30 minutes at home each evening. Read from a variety of genres. Confer with teacher to learn and apply new skills, enhance fluency and self monitor for meaning. Apply comprehension strategies to all reading and document thinking in the form of quick jots and as entries in reading notebook. Participate appropriately during partner share or book club meetings. Keep a basic reading log and a trail of post-its. Self assess and set reading goals.

Social Studies Knowledge of the past helps us understand the present and prepare for the future. Map and Geography skills are integrated into all units. Major Units: Greece, Rome, Byzantine Empire, Beginnings of Christianity and Islam, Middle Ages. Projects will be assigned throughout the year. Students are given study guides when test dates are announced (a week’s notice is given for a test).
