START AT THE BOTTOM AND WORK YOUR WAY UP THE ‘STEPS TO SUCCESS’ In the extract, the writer creates an atmosphere of mystery through the description of the setting. This is portrayed in the first line, as it creates tension and uncertainty instantly when the narrator remarks that their blood was suddenly, “brought to a stop.” This effectively conveys that a surprising event has happened, and has startled the narrator significantly, paralysing all of their functions and subsequently creating intrigue for the reader. Have you used both S.I.T.E and P.E.C.S in your response? Have you made sure that your paragraph answers the question? CHECKS Have you made sure you have used subject specific terminology where appropriate? Have you used varying synonyms for ‘show’? Have you picked out a key word/piece of punctuation and explained their effect? How and why does your example prove your point? State your opinion (evaluation) using P.E.C.S. Provide a textual reference from the text that supports your point. (Quotation – 5 words MAX). START Make a clear point that answers the question. Embedding S.I.T.E.
