Basic Demonstration Speech Requirements Needs to be 4-8 minutes long Must have equipment/materials with which to demonstrate Must include a physical creation of part or all of an item or show how to perform, play, or do something Must be written in outline form – Due March 20 (include work cited) Must be given on a pre-approved topic (topics due Thursday, March 6)

Writing Tips for Demo. Speech Know your process well before you explain it. Be aware of your listeners. How much do they already know about the topic? Put the steps in order according to time. In some processes several steps happen at the same time. Define new or unfamiliar terms (Ex. Lug wrench).

Writing tips, cont. Show steps visually. Demonstrate using models or props. Warn your audience of possible difficulties, dangers, or common mistakes. What pitfalls should they avoid or precautions should they take? Explain the purpose of a step when necessary. Have all equipment ready and tested. Have a “Plan B” in mind in case of equipment failure.

Topic Ideas Recipe - show how to make; have finished product to share with class Sport - techniques; equipment; how to do Craft or Hobby - how to make something Perform - dance steps; an instrument; self- defense Build/Restore/Fix - wood; old furniture, etc.
