Atmospheric Stability, Clouds and Lapse Rates. Hot Air Rises or
Inversions. Usually temperature decreases with height by approximately 5.5 C per km But with high pressure, clear or near clear skies, and light winds,
Atmospheric Stability The resistance of the atmosphere to vertical motion. Stable air resists vertical motion Unstable air encourages vertical motion.

UNR and DRI Weather Comparison Jan 2010 Why temperature? DRI is about 143.3 meters above UNR. Adiabatic lapse rate 9.8 C/km, UNR is warmer by 1.4 C ???

UNR and UNR Farm

UNR Weather Station Location tractor

Schematic of a Weather Station see http://www.cemp.dri.edu/cemp/recent/

Air Temperature at DRI and UNR in Jan 2010 UNR is warmer at mid day, but DRI is warmer at night.

(DRI - UNR) + 1.4 C = 0 ???? Monster Inversions!! No Wind!

Air Pollution Consequence of Stagnation and Inversion: Total Particle Mass Concentration (PM 2.5 um) Summer Wild Fire Mexico City Reno

And the Black Carbon Particle Mass Concentration Mexico City ventilates better than Reno. This woodsmoke was mostly not Black Carbon.
