MDC 2010 Reproductive health information on the World Wide Web Dirk Schoonbaert ITM Library March 25, 2010

Program Internet information retrieval tools. Reproductive health resources on the World Wide Web. Practical exercices.

Information overload Many millions of websites are available on the internet. There are huge differences in quality, relevance and reliability. Every day thousands of pages are added, updated, removed or have their address (URL) changed.

Information deficiency Not all data that are published on paper or in electronic databases are also available on the internet. Not all existing electronic resources can be accessed by everybody (intranets! deep web!) or for free (expensive commercial services!).

Web indexes Text-based machine-generated indexes. Generally far more pages are found than needed. Fortunately relevance-ranking is often quite good (based on external links vs. paid rank enhancement). E.g.: Google [+ Google Scholar = restricted to scientific literature] All the Web Search.com …

Web directories Subject-based human intellectual endeavour. E.g.: General, comprehensive: Open Directory Project, Yahoo, … Biomedical and health sciences: HealthWeb, MedlinePlus, Essential Health Links, …; Covering specific subjects, e.g. reproductive health, sexually transmitted infections, …

Reproductive health … DHS - Demographic & Health Surveys [reports, statistical data] Engender Health [courses, guidelines, publications, projects] FHI - Family Health International [publications, programmes] Guttmacher Institute [fact sheets, documents, publications, journals] IPPF – International Planned Parenthood Federation [guides, reports, bulletins]

… Reproductive health JHPIEGO (JHU) [news, books, programs] Population Council [publications, journals, photos] Reproline (JHPIEGO) [multilingual, reading materials, training resources] RHG - Reproductive Health Gateway [comprehensive portal covering >100 RH related websites] Sexual and Reproductive Health (WHO) [documents, RHL = Reproductive Health Library]

STI, HIV, AIDS IUSTI – International Union against Sexually Transmitted Infections Sexually Transmitted Infections (WHO) Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria HIV InSite UNAIDS / ONUSIDA

Electronic journals Voir: AIDS International Journal of STD & AIDS JAIDS - Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes Reproductive Health (BMC) Reproductive Health Matters Sexually Transmitted Diseases Sexually Transmitted Infections

Databases Voir: PubMed Population Index Health Care in Developing Countries [+ Bibl.] Factual databases: DHS, UNAIDS, … Knowledgebases: Cochrane Library; Reproductive Health Library (WHO); …

Exercices Find information on your own country, using the directories or RH sites listed above, excluding web indexes like Google: Reproductive health statistics. 3 programs on reproductive health promotion. 3 articles or scientific reports on reproductive health.
