Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration How do the processes of Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis cycle energy?  Autotrophs vs. Heterotrophs   - Organisms that produce their own food for their energy are called Producers a.k.a. Autotrophs - Organisms that cannot produce their own food are called Consumers a.k.a. Heterotrophs They must obtain their energy by eating food produced by Autotrophs or by eating other heterotrophs.

Photosynthesis The chloroplast is the organelle where photosynthesis happens! 1. Light reactions 2. Dark reactions

Photosynthesis - Sunlight is the initial (ultimate) energy source for most organisms. - Autotrophs trap energy from sunlight and then use this trapped energy to make energy-rich Glucose molecules (sugar a.k.a. C6H12O6) and oxygen in the process called Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis - Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts of plant cells. - Inside the chloroplast, the green pigment, chlorophyll traps and absorbs the energy from sunlight.

Photosynthesis The equation for Photosynthesis is: Carbon dioxide +WATER + light energy = Oxygen +Glucose(food) CO2 + H2O + sun = O2 + C6H12O6

Photosynthesis How do you read an equation? ** There are 2 sides of an equation: The left side is the reactant side (things that are needed, used, required, necessary, for the process to take place) The right side is the product side (things that are produced, made, formed, excreted, given off, released, is a byproduct, as a result of the process) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wi60tQa8jfE&feature=related

Photosynthesis There are 3 reactants needed for photosynthesis. One of them is light energy from sunlight. The other 2 reactants are: Carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) There are 2 products made by photosynthesis. The main product is Glucose/carbohydrates (C6H12O6) The other product is Oxygen(O2)
